A Few Reasons to Slow Down a Bit Each Day

Have you ever noticed that everyday life can seem to become extremely fast-paced, virtually out of the blue?

Today, there are all sorts of different chores, tasks, and obligations that you're likely to have to deal with, ranging from things like upgrading your tools courtesy of a company such as Glue Guns Direct, to meeting a complicated work deadline, having repairs done on your home, or getting your car serviced.

In addition to all of this, there is the unavoidable fact that things like social media naturally seem to be speeding up the pace of life.

Here are just a few reasons to slow down a bit each day.

Because a slower pace promotes deeper focus and performance

In his recent book “Stolen Focus,” the writer Johann Hari Looks at some compelling evidence that the kind of work we are doing when we are trying to be as quick as possible is inevitably more shallow, less well considered, and less effective, than the work we do when we slow down and truly engage.

Other writers have made the same point in recent times, including Cal Newport, author of “Deep Work.”

When push comes to shove, it's probably fair to say that most people don't just want to “get by”, but would actually like to do their best, when it comes to things like excelling in their professional lives and ensuring that they are living well and achieving their full potential in their personal lives, too.

Although "going fast" all the time can be exciting and engaging, and can feel productive, it seems to be the case that it's necessary to slow down regularly if you actually want to do your best.

Because a slower pace allows for more mindful engagement with the present moment

There's a lot of magic and power to be found in the present moment if you just take the time to notice it.

Part of the problem is that many of us are completely distracted from the present moment more or less constantly, because we are always thinking about something else, dwelling on the past or future, or on a new story we’ve read, or a variety of other things.

When you slow down, however, you will undoubtedly find it much easier to be mindfully engaged with the present moment.

Because “slowing down” can help you to find balance and avoid burnout

Burnout is real, and you don't have to be a highflying executive in order to suffer as a result of excessive stress and strain.

Slowing down and especially making time for rejuvenating activities like nature walks, reading a good novel, and catching up on sleep – can be invaluable when it comes to helping you to overcome burnout, and to ensure that you are able to remain balanced and resilient in the face of the stresses that everyday life will throw your way.

Chronic stress can be extremely detrimental in a range of different ways, not only with regards to things like reducing your productivity, but also by contributing to – and even causing – conditions like "brain fog," insomnia, and more.

Generally speaking, the more fast-paced your life is, the more susceptible you will be to stress, and the less likely you will be to find moments to recharge.
