LOOKING BACK : A YEAR AFTER MY LASIK EYE SURGERY (BY SHINAGAWA LASIK)

If eyeglasses AND braces are some of the requirements to qualify as a nerd, then I was one! And no pun intended. At one point in my life, my world revolved around library, school, home. Then came review center (while I was reviewing for the CPA board), dorm, home. Then office, home. A piece of me sorta regret this part to be honest, but most of me just screams thankful. I wouldn't be where I am now without these character-forming experiences. While I am excited that I'm getting towards the better-version of me, I always find time to look back what transpired over the last few years.

It took me a long while to look for a blog-worthy picture of me with eyeglasses on! Obviously, there's none! :)) On the brighter side, this proves my theory that I removed my glasses on picture-taking moments. 99% of the time. Hurray for this 1% treasure!

To do a bit justice on this 'treasure', this was taken few years back when we're in Bohol. It was a midnight girl-talk session with my friends, which explains the food-slash-clutter all around.

I was too lazy to put on my contact lenses so I just flashed a big smile for the camera! Our Bohol trip? Twas fun! Broken bridge walking. Zip lining. Snorkeling. The works! Picture on the right part was just me cam-whoring after my shift :D

Before I get sidetracked some more, allow me to reminisce March of last year. I was contemplating real hard because this would be my first (and hopefully last) LASER EYE SURGERY. Now, who in the world will jump on this bandwagon in a jiffy? Fear is an understatement! Fear of the unknown to be precise. THANK GOD, all went well. After a series of test plus the moment of truth, tadaaaan! I'm back to my 20/20 vision. To get the blow-by-blow account of my LASIK Treatment last year, click HERE.

To give you a list of FAQ's about the before, during and after treatment, fill in your curiosity tank with details below:

1. HOW MUCH? 2 words but very important! Okay, hold your breath. It's Php 90,000. TOOT. Before you say 'forget it', please know that I availed the 50% promo that time so I paid about Php 45,000. Not cheap, true true. But, going back to my 3 fave words about this whole experience. IT'S WORTH IT. If you can save up for this, I'd say GO for it.

2. PAINFUL MUCH? If the answer is between YES and NO, it's NO. My friends will attest how low my pain tolerance is. So when I say it's not painful, trust me :D To expound a bit further, an anesthesia was administered on my eyes in 3 dosages. Don't ask me to enumerate, I'm too numb due to nervousness that time.

Perk #1: I can do FOTD (Face of the Day) posts without the hassle of contact lenses.

3. CAN I TRY OTHER AVAILABLE PROCEDURES? While there are some other procedures that are cheaper, I'm sure you don't want to gamble your chance of being blind right? That said, I'd recommend you stick with INTRALASIK (and other advance procedures). I heard some procedures use blade on the eyes. ACK. NO WAY! I'll pay the higher option anytime! Blade? NEVER. But of course, it's up to you. As for me, the thought of blade touching my peepers make me shiver!

4. WILL THERE BE A CHANCE THAT I'LL BE BLIND? I can sense some cringes! I asked the same question too! I even went to our family eye doctor at Capitol Medical to erase my doubts. Dr. Sison told me 99% of INTRALASIK surgery is successful. We need to pray that we belong to the 99%. You can imagine how I get "puppy-eyed" to GOD. "Lord, I want to belong to the 99% group! Please po. Amen"

Perk #2: Target Shooting? Game! (This is a real gun, for the record).
Related Post: STRONGHAND GUN SHOOTING RANGE REVIEW Click HERE.

5. HOW LONG? This is the fun part. The process itself is about 5 minutes. THAT SHORT! The whole duration pre-during-post, took about 30 minutes, if I remember correctly. So if you're self-talking now, go ahead, you can tell to yourself: "Di ba, it's less than 5 minutes lang. Tiis tiis!"

 6. AFTER TREATMENT. Truth be told, this was the part when I felt a bit pain. Burning sensation to be exact. In Tagalog, MAHAPDI. I was asked to take Mefenamic Acid. After 30 mins,  pain was gone. Doctors said it's more of my eyes feeling the shock. You see, when you undergo a LASIK treatment, a suck-like machine will be placed unto your eyes to make sure the laser will beam on the right place.

Perk #3: Facial session is now hassle-free (no need to remove contact lenses
to do away with irritation that can be caused by the steam machine).

7. AFTER THE TREATMENT, CAN I RESUME TO MY REGULAR ACTIVITIES? NO. For a month, no swimming and other contact sports (i.e. boxing). For a week, you are required to wear a protective glasses. The catch? EVEN WHEN YOU SLEEP AND TAKE A BATH! You also need to put on some eye drops (anti-biotics).

8. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? Personally, I didn't experience any. THANK YOU LORD AGAIN. However, when I did my research, most common side effect is dry-eye syndrome.

 9. DOES SHINAGAWA OFFER A WARRANTY? Yes. Within three (3) years, if you want to re-do the INTRALASIK procedure, no additional payment will be required of you. Talk about peace of mind.

10. CAN I STILL PUT ON MY KIKAY STUFF? I put on eyeliners and masaras after 6 months. But that's just me. Doctors said it's possible to resume to your regular life after a month. This includes putting on make-up.

You can visit other third-party reviews on SHINAGAWA's website. I'm happy to let you know that you can see my review there :) Click HERE. -CMK

Perk #4: Traveling is now a breeze. No need to pack huge bottle of contact lens solution. Of which I hard-headedly put into my hand-carry baggage. Result? I need to shoot them on the airport garbage bin. Related Post: BEHOLDING THE BEAUTY OF BANGKOK Click HERE.

  4. Wow Miss K. I've been looking for someone who tried this. I have a very blurry vision, 650 on both eyes to be exact. I inherited it to some great grandfather or so. I was never in front of the tv when I was growing up so it really as a shock for my parents. But I have some doubts about this kasi sabi nila bumabalik daw ulit pagkalabo ng mata. Bumalik po ba yung pagkalabo ng mata mo Miss K?

  7. Wonderful, it's always a pleasure to hear positive results of Lasik Treatment. I'm from Arizona and I've been fortunate enough to be treated by the Arizona Retinal Specialists, it is where Dr. Gholam Peyman, who by the way is considered the "father of Lasik" eye surgery, stand as one of the head physicians. He was not my doctor at the time but the was the experience was delightful and more than what I expect.

  11. Thanks to Kristine and her blog, I was able to encourage myself to finally undergo Lasik. With her help, I was able to avail of the 50% off for the Intralasik. Everything she said is too true, no pain, costly yes but the result is so wonderful. It's a bright new world for me. I had my lasik done April 30 this year and for almost 23 days, it's so wonderful to have clear vision without contact lenses and glasses. Thanks Kristine and Shinagawa! :)

    1. I am happy too initially, 3 years later I noticed ghosting and painful left eye. I am not scaring you but we have a high risk of corneal ecstacia which happens 5+ years after operation. I had mine done also at Shinagawa. I have large pupil but they still considered me as a candidate for LASIK. So now I am seeing starbursts. It is all about the money.

  13. I had LASIK also at Shinagawa. Now after reading the side effects, I am regretting the operation. Please research more before putting your eyes at risk.

  19. It is more precise to a much higher degree than that of traditional LASIK surgery. Overall this results in greater vision correction (i.e., seeing 20/20 instead of 20/60 or 20/80) and less complications such as halos, glares, and starbursts.become an optometrist
