CLUB ASTORIA PLAZA MARKETING SCHEME (A SCAM OR NOT A SCAM?)

Photo from PinkMountains.Wordpress.com

I am in two minds whether to publish this post but I think blogging is a public service too, to some extent. Let me start off with this, I was with my friends when I got a phone call. Conversation went something like this:

Lotty: Ma'm this is Lotty. You can claim it asap. Are you single?
CMK: Yes po (dumbfounded by her introductory question!)
Lotty: Kasi Ma'am you won a ticket po for 2, buffet siya at Astoria. Kayo po si Kristine... (mentioned my whole name) and your job is (mentioned my job title)
CMK: Yes po.
Lotty: Ma'am remember you've filled out a ticket sa Petron last week?
CMK: Yes po. (As you can see I've done most of the listening part).
Lotty: Pwede ko po kayong schedule bukas?
CMK: Wait po, I have work tomorrow, email me the details then we'll see.
CMK: Okay po, may gagawin pa po ako so we'll keep in touch. What's your name madam?
Lotty: Lotty (plus her surname).
*** End of Conversation ***

Fast forward, I went home then proudly announced to mom that I'm no longer a loser on raffle tickets because at last I've won. Then mom candidly told me: "Scam yan." Me: Gulp. To make all things clear, I looked for reviews about this whole thing. Here are some true experiences I've found via blogosphere:

1. They'll invite you to a free lunch or dinner.
2. You will be asked to fill out a form with details such as your salary bracket, etc.
3. They will ask you to watch a 1.5 hour-long presentation.
4. They will offer you a membership fee worth Php 100,000 above!
5. Based on their experiences, they never get to use their GCs.

Now, the question: IS IT A SCAM OR NOT?
Scam is being defined as a dishonest scheme. It's for you to label it as a scam or not. It can be on a thin borderline between scam and hardcore selling. In fairness to the people behind this tactic, it's their way probably to market their subscription. However, they should have the HONESTY to let their prospective clients know from the get-go what is the real deal. Is it a free buffet, really? Or they are just beefing you up so you'll stick your ass off to watch their 90-minute presentation?

MY EXPERIENCE.
Well, I chose not to attend their buffet and presentation. Good to know that there are blog reviews to help us determine what's real and fake! Here are the blog links that I've read:

♣ HARDCORE SELLING: Club Astoria, Crown Regency Club Ultima and Club Bali Isabel Timeshare by Pink Mountains (click HERE)
♣ Club Astoria - Holiday Ownership Promo Marketing Experience by MMDC7 (click HERE)
♣ Club Astoria Marketing Scheme(s) -- "no strings attached" by Burberry Cheesecake (click HERE)

Let this be a warning to all of you guys. If time is a precious commodity for you, tactics like these can piss you off big time. I could just imagine my mom's reaction when she hears all about this. Moms know best indeed!

Be smart! Time is also a currency (like cash), so don't let these schemes get the best out of your weekend or whenever your free time is. -CMK

  1. ths is kinda scary..good thing your mom warned you agad. Though it's kinda disappointing to hear you got excited for nothing. At least you didnt lose anything. If it were me and im still doubtful whether it's a scam or not, i'd ask myself if it's worth the risk :)

    2. thank you for the blogs like this. all the concern. at least may mga kababayan tayong may puso para sa kapwa. unlike those scammers. grabe. our vacation in boracay turned into sleepless nights after. yes, we had our "free dinner" too and we regret everything that has happened after. 28K is a big money still. I had my contract cancelled and no refund.

People, save yourselves. don't fall for their bait. mappressure talaga kayo and maeentice sa palabas nila. don't fall. stay away from all these kinds. you'd read a lot of blogs and reviews about these kind of bogus.

lessons learned the hard way ang nangyari. they've got my hard earned money but i've got a clear conscience. wala ko naagrabyadong mga tao. karma na lang sa kanila.

  2. Hi, I registered as a member last May 7,2013 I signed the contract, only providing my name and billing address and mobile num,And yesterday I cancelled it because I realized that their 'good' presentation is like a SCAM. Fortunately I didnt provide my credit num because that time I dont'have my card and I dont remember my card number. I also did not give any cash for downpayment cause I just went there to use the 'buffet' prize[Don't have enough money for downpayment]. Problem is, they are texting me now that there will be a mail to be sent in our home asking me to pay the 20k fine stated in the contract. Do I still need to pay that? Can they have me arrested/filed a case regarding this matter? Thanks.

    1. Hi, First of all, thanks for sharing your experience. And I'm sorry that this has happened.

As much as I would like to give a sound advice, I feel that I'm not in a position to do that since I'm not a lawyer.

From what I've gathered, this activity is NOT registered with DTI (Department of Trade and Industry). This might be a good contention if they intend to file a case against you.

I suggest that you DON'T pay any amount. Rather, consult with a credible lawyer about this. You may also call ABS-CBN / GMA hotline for free counseling. Who knows? This may be a good avenue to expose their dishonest scheme.

I hope all things will be well with you.

  4. avoid club astoria at all times, and all its hard selling and evil marketing minions. nasira honeymoon namin dahil dito, bumigay kami sa pressure, 24k pesos downpayment from credit card, pag ipacancel 20k ang babayaran mo, so 4k nalang ang expect ko na babalik sa akin. sayang, nasira ang image ng boracay dahil dito sa scam na kagagawan ng mga mapanlinlang na holiday consultants at managers kuno. i hate club astoria, share nyo ang post na to, para maraming mawarningan bago pa sila maloko.

  5. Thanks for this blog. We just received today a call and text from Leny Delos Santos of Astoria Plaza and told us that we won a free dinner good for too in Mariott Hotel 6-730pm July 9. We will be also claiming our gift certificate for a 3 days and 2 nights hotel accommodation either local or international with matching stub# etc. We have our lunch with my family in AA BBQ and there is actually a raffle ticket given to us and we just filled that up and that was the stub that we have won. We are about to say yes but my yaa texted me that my 3 kids have projects in school and need to buy supplies for that so I decided not to go there instead besides it just a free dinner. Fortunately, I'm so curious about this Astoria as I also received a call before but havent entertained it. with curiosity, I have checked my internet and do some research on the blog and now I found out that there's a lot of things here already happened and Thanks God for my kids who helped me realized that I we are in SCAM already. Thanks God... really.

  8. i kept on saying No but they still insist, they will give you another option from 480,000 membership down to their lowest offer na 11,000 for 1 year membership. i was just joking na 1k lang kaya ko idown, i was shocked kc pinatos nila, kahiyaan na din at 11pm na, nag-ok na ko and take note, cnamahan pa kmi magwidraw sa atm, humingi aq OR den sabi nya pag nafully paid ko na daw tsaka pa lang iisue ang receipt. Ok Fine! I got my GC,, then ngsearch ako ng mga reviews and i found a forum na sandamkmak ang complains, i printed it out and decided to go back to their office, maybe for justice... ayoko kc ung feeling na naloko aq, 5:30 pm start ng office hours nila, kc sarado pa nung dumating ako. I looked for my sales agent told them that i wanted to settle the full downpayment, ang saya saya nyang lumapit skin,,, tas ibinalik ko GC, and asked for may 1k cash out,, nagastos daw nya,, haha... sabi ko di ako aalis dito na di muh binabalik skin un, wala daw xa mahiraman, sabi ko, hiram ka sa manager muh, ganda ng porma nya, imposible wala xa pera, may atm machine jan, samahan kita,, haha,, binalik ko sa kanya ginawa nya skin,,. Tahimik xa, alam kong aware cla dun. binigay ko ung print out ng mga complains sa isa nilang invite and told him na ipasa sa ibang invites, then umalis na ko... Lesson learned..

  10. I also received a text message a while ago from a certain femy cayading, she is from solano n. viscaya, fortunately sh's also an ilocana knowing our dialect well. she told me the same as the stories above, she negotiated that we will receive the prizes we won tonight at Isabela Hotel where Mr. Dennis Tobias will be awaiting. this is their manager. Since I received the text I was exited or even my whole family. but I came to open my Laptop to search of the AsTORIA and their promos, I learn this a special case of SCAM. thanks to the bloggers anyway.....

  11. They're starting again this year. Got a text msg last wk and dahil na excite ako sa msg na nanalo ako (and i really filled up their raffle ticket from seafood island), i replied back. Today they called me and parehong pareho ng mga kwento nyo ang spiel nila. I said i'll be going sa moa astoria, smx convention center to claim it and pati narin yung free dinner for 2. But after reading all your comments, NO WAY i'll be wasting my time. Thanks for the blog tlaga. Kainis lang.... Got excited for nothing, kastart pa naman ng taon.

  14. Hi the same thing happened to us today, Jan 28, 2014! We filled up a raffle stub last Jan 12 given during dinner at The Buffet in Commonwealth. The gay caller from Astoria said there's free dinner and asked if I had a special someone because there'll be music to serenade us, I guess. It was in Shaw Blvd which was too far. Good thing there's traffic so we decided not to go.

We should've known this was dubious bec in the raffle stub made us indicate our salary bracket. Too intrusive!

Thank God for this blog! That is a marketing strategy bordering on a SCAM. This has to trend! People, let's use social media to warn future victims. This has to be made public!!!

    4. Hi. Same experienced. filled up a coupon at shell magallanes. Got a text saying i won a buffer dinner for 2 at astoria and a 3days 2nights accommodation on their hotels local or international. Then they called. Parang mag robot kung magsalita. Scripted kumbaga. At first, parang naniniwala na ako. Then they sched me later for the buffet and to pick up my raffle won accommodation. But then, parang something's fishy. So i searched kung totoo nga. Then woolah! Eto lumabas. Now ive decided not to go later. Thanks for this.

  19. I almost give in on their good-to-be-true offer as well! first hand I asked the I almost give in on their good-to-be-true offer as well! first hand I asked the agent if just in case we like the offer that will be presented, can they give us time to think about it and decide whether to avail the said Holiday Ownership when we're ready and she said with a regretful tone "Ay ma'am naku one-day and one-time offer lng po ito khit na bumalik kyo dto as walk-in hnd n nmin kyo mbbgyan ng gnitong offer". she even began to humiliate us by saying "hnd nmn po kmi mgsasayang na pakainin kyo ng buffet just to let you go kagad". I let her introduced us to the so-called luxurious life and vacay ahead of us, when she was done with all the scheme (finally! after roughly 2hours) I told her we're NOT interested, she asked in a doubtful tone again "Really ma'am, I don't believe you po sure ako may ipon kayo based on your current job and wla nmn pong humahadlang s inyo diba po sir?" returning the question to my boyfriend, I felt sad for the sales rep, I answered in a respectful manner where I believe she will understand "Ms, we also have priorities and not to mention that you are offering us a life-long commitment we're not ready to take risk for, dont get me wrong, yes the offer is great but try to understand that hard-earned money are hard to let go as well" she rebutted with "ay naku ma'am hnd nmn kyo mpapahiya dto and hnd pla kyo handa p mglabas ng fund today sna sinabi nyo from the start" thats the time I started walking out before I totally lose my temper, she immediately asked for another 30mins for the Free accomodation voucher to be printed before we leave, I agreed, while waiting she offered again vochers amounting to 11k but I simply declined. her manager asked why we declined all the offers? I answered in a irritated tone "We somehow regret that we let you and your agent drag us upto this point where I can say very annoying, first hand you told me Wala pong pilitan ma'am/sir then ngaun iniinsulto nyo n kmi just bec we declined the offer" the manager started bragging how the company changed many lives and felt sorry we will never experienced the luxurious vacays. after receiving the Free accomodation voucher, which you need to deposit 5k pala if you will use it, the agent, giving a referral form, told us "ma'am KAHIT YAN NALANG PO ITULONG NYO, BAWI PO KAYO BY REFERRING someone you know, sulat nyo po number dto" I said "We have to go, I believe the insults and time were enough for the buffet, after all, kayo nmn tumawag at ng invite samin, SALAMAT!" there, a waste of time, a bad experience and sales strategy and most of all, worst scripting ever. Good thing we did not give in! Just sharing my story! be vigilant nxt time. Godbless them! :)

  23. Me and my family also experienced this harassment by the Astoria team. Just this October 28, 2014 while we are at the vacation in Boracay, some guys wearing polo uniforms hurriedly talk to random people promoting their free buffet lunch for tomorrow. They would write their names on the piece of paper and then will ask you how many are you on vacation. Of course without us knowing it, my fiance took the paper and we are set for the free lunch the next day.

We arrived at the Astoria de Boracay 11:30 and saw the guy who promoted the promo. He immediately assists us and gave us papers to fill up. This includes the job information, contact numbers etc. My parents were also asked about their jobs/business (mmm i don't know why are they so much interested on jobs...) So we took the advantage of eating the luxurious buffet (YUMMY!) and after that, another agent came to us and she had the longest presentation in my life lolz. From the hotel itself to the international offers, and bragging the other astoria hotels they have all over the philippines. My fiance is confident enough to handle the conversation. We even pretend to be interested with the offers since my family already talked about the conversation strategy that they might bring up. Finally, the moment they have been preparing for, a 'MANAGER' came to us with a piece of paper and hurriedly writes the amount of membership to be paid for. Enumerating the annual fees then dividing them into monthly installments blah blah. We nodded because the offer is almost a million so they cut-off the offer to a lower priced room which is a one-bedroom thing. But still a big NO from my fiance. It's a good battle though. The manager LOSE over my fiance's excuses probably because the latter is more experience in handling scammers.. hahahaha .. we won !!! :P

  26. I also received a text message from Astoria today, March 27, 2015. The same scheme that you mentioned above. Buti na lang I have officemates who had the same experience before. What bothered me really in the text message I received was the statement, You may have some good news for you." The word "may" is kinda dubious. Kasi, if you really won the raffle draw, then it means a good news already. :)

Thank God for the angels and small voices He sent, that I was able to avoid this time-consuming marketing strategy.

By the way, the GCs they give cannot actually be used. Laging fully booked ang hotel. Hahahaha

    Be warned. Be wise.

  27. I also lured by this Club Astoria gimmick and swiped my credit card for a DP of P21,000. At the end of the day I realized how bad my decision was. Pero wala na akong magagawa, nangyari na. Tumawag ako sa credit card company na may card ako, tinanong ko kung pwedeng ipa-hold yung incoming transaction from Astoria merchant but they told me it is not possible. It is a valid transaction and they don’t have the authority to hold the amount tendered unless I’ll ask the merchant to do so. Siempre hindi nila gagawin yun.

Now I’m turning to my second option, since I’m currently employed in one of the globally known law firm, and seek help from one of our lawyers. He said to me “Do not pay anything” since I didn’t use any of their services/products. Hayaan ko lang raw na kulitin ako magsasawa rin yun, because if they will file a legal case against me it would only cost them more. Mas maganda raw sabayan ko ng DTI complaint against them to counteract what they would plan against me.

Then about my credit settlement, that’s another matter. Pwede ko raw hindi na bayaran yun kung credit standing is not a concern for me dahil walang nakukulong sa unsettled credit card debt and this is not a estafa case. Pero pwede raw akong mag-file ng dispute letter saying the valid reason about why I won’t pay that debt just to create a positive vibes if still I want to protect my credit standing. Maaring mangungulit rin ito or they would summon a collecting agent. But still you can ignore it.

    Your comment is awaiting moderation.

  28. Got a call from these people(Mark Reyes, Francis Valdepeñas) last June 4,2015, same story as with you guys, free buffet, free hotel. Filled up the promo stub at Caltex Daang Hari 2 weeks prior to the call. My wife and I got so excited, they scheduled us on that weekend and we agreed. We are all set to go, while waiting for my wife, with my phone on hand, I googled for that promo and this and some other articles came out, right then and there I told my wife we will go somewhere else, so thank you for sharing this.

The way I see it, based sa mga experiences ng iba na nabasa ko, this is like "Budol Budol Gang Executive Version", may script sila na sinusunod, may mga kasabwat sila, papakitaan ka nila ng mga magagandang bagay, d ka nila basta basta papakawalan and kung mahina-hina lood mo to say "NO" to them, you will fall into their trap, and the free buffet and free hotel accomodation and pinang-bait nila sayo.

Pati trabaho ko alam. Some entities might have fed my information to them. BEWARE ANG LAHAT!!!

  35. We all have to be very careful of Astoria membership way of selling. If their product or service is good then why are they so desperate in selling? Here is my experience. I was invited by my friend to join her to attend an invite by Astoria selling hotel membership. After dinner, we are aware that we will listen to a 90 minutes sales talk. The sales talk could have gone well. However, I did not like the way how Astoria’s agent sell their membership. I was asked several times if I have the budget and money which I found very rude. The agent even compared their membership perks with my current job and housing. I was surprised that they give negative comments about my present situation just to make their membership look good. I was so disappointed attending their sales talk as I felt that the agent is trying to demoralize my situation. It is like I will look good if I purchase the membership and I am not if I did not purchase. I think that this is not a good marketing strategy as you are not supposed to make people feel bad just because they do not find your membership interesting. The way they talk to client is already a NO for me to buy their membership. I wish they could have made it more positive rather than like this. This is just a real review from my end nothing personal so do not be offended. I actually find the hotel old and not upgraded.

    1. Hi all.

i have been also a receiver of a gift certificate. They contacted me that i have won a buffet and a gift certificate for 3d2n for any hotel affiliated in bangkok bali davao malaysia and us.

Before i went to their office i already checked the net since the way they relay the message was quick and will keep you the hang of excitement. I knew before there have been complaints regarding their strategy, but i still try to go on only having guts to face them and claim the buffet and the GC.

I went around 7:30night in MOA.. I was entertained by a buffet. Then after my dinner comes the presentation. It was really long presentation.. But i comply with their requirements i make them feel like i am interested. They presented the perks and the offers that will only be given once you sign up for the night. They dont give the membership fee during the presentation.. The manager will do it for the presentor. I had kept the conversation going and attentive to the terms and flowery words they made.. And when the manager has entered the presentation.. He presented me a 10yr membership around 180k discounted to 150k. I just laughed with the cost of membership, decline their offer and I just inform them that i went there for theGC and not for anything else.

Conversation done, the manager gave me right away the GC and the meeting is done.

Lesson that I see in the situation.. It was not a scam.. It was just a bad strategy for them to offer the opportunity. You will be scammed if you let them.. If you know why you where there and you know where to stand to, they cant beat you nor give in to what they want.

Or maybe the manager was just intimidated by the way i respond to his offer.

Will try if i can book the gift certificate. :)

  36. Hi guys,

Seems like there are a lot of people who have been fooled by Astoria, well then I'll teach you how to fool them too if you follow these tips of mine.

1st bring a car then when you're about to enter the buffet, don't tell them you have a car so they won't confiscate your parking ticket. Just pay for the 70 pesos or something parking fee then stuff yourself full from the buffet.

2nd Before you eat, a guy that seems like the manager will give you a form requesting for further information. All you have to do to skip the 90min presentation is tell your friend to pretend that he/she is working in a travel agency. Why? Because travel agencies CANNOT purchase the presentation and they will actually be wasting their 90min pitching you their offer.

Then you can get the free 3d/2n that you've won kasi you've actually won it. haha So that's what I did last night and it worked. I hope that if enough people will do this, matitigil na rin sila.

  37. Hello. I also received a call (and a text) just today regarding this same marketing strategy. Out of too much excitement, I invited my friends, (Nuns, Dora, and RunningMan). RunningMan immediately declined the offer because he was close-minded during that time, on the other hand, Dora and Nuns seemed interested. So Nuns tried to research about Astoria, and we found ourselves reading this blog. Same tactics, same words, same offer...

Good thing there are blogs like this! At least we're aware about this Astoria thingy.

  38. So I availed their 1 year membership with lots of other coupons including 3 days and 2 nights free Astoria Bora or Palawan for 8K. I think it was perky since Boracay hotels would cost much more than what I paid. Plus I got discount coupons that I am selling to my friends now and the free Hotel accommodation in Bali Indonesia. As much as business is concerned, I didn't see any malicious intent as I was informed that there would be a presentation for 90 minutes (It actually just lasted for 20 minutes) before going there. I thought that there 30 year membership offer is ridiculous and laughable as if you're tied with them forever (boring right? like you wont try any other hotels anymore for the rest of your life!) but yeah, the Bora/Palawan offer is good and all the other perks. Well, I haven't really encountered any problem so far and I hope not, because I haven't used any coupon. My friend is about to lodge using a 50% coupon so let's see if I would have any trouble booking that. I'll follow up on this one.

  39. We made the mistake of signing up with them. I gave my down payment without having the chance to do research. To my horror, when I got back to my hotel, I read a lot of bad reviews online. I also found out that the claim that the membership value increases overtime isn't true. We immediately called to cancel that night but we were offered other options. Once we got back to Manila and had internet access, I immediately sent an email to cancel the membership. Customer support responded in a reasonable amount of time and directed us to Credit and Collections department. Unfortunately, this department is a pain to have transactions with. They never reply to emails and calls you instead. I requested for them to reply via email so we will have a record but up to this date, still nothing. During one of the phone calls, I informed them that I will be consulting my lawyer about the 50K down payment just to check from my end if I can refund the whole amount but reiterated that I want the membership cancelled still (phone call + email). On the last day (where we can still get a portion of our down when we cancel), I still didn't get replies from them even when they promised to send one. When we followed up, they said that this was because we are consulting legal, so they had put the processing on hold. It's okay if there was a miscommunication but putting the blame on me why the cancellation was not done and saying "ang gulo gulo niyo" was unprofessional of them. If only they sent emails, then we could've avoided the problem. A part of me think that they intentionally do not reply to put us in the situation where the cooling period has passed and I can't get even the 30K. (within 10 days from signing up, you can cancel and refund 30k out of 50k). So think twice before signing any contract, this is a lesson I learned the hard and expensive way. I can't say if it's a scam or not because I did not try to avail of their services but their strategy is not 100% clean and honest. scheming in a negative way.

  40. And it's now in Cebu. This happened to us very recently. I got to fill out a raffle coupon last January at Cabalen SM Cebu when we had an eat all you can dinner buffet. Yesterday I received persistent calls and texts from Trixie of Stellar Boracay Hotel that I won a 3/D 2/N stay at local hotel in Palawan and international such as Malaysia, Indonesia, etc valid for 6 months from date of issue. To claim the prize we need to go to Wellcome Hotel near Ayala as they also reserved daw 2 VIP seats with free dinner buffet and watch a 90min presentation. The hotel manager Mr. Edison Rosario would welcome us. I was so happy because I finally won a raffle outside company events. I really thought that it was my lucky day. I confirmed our meet up set at 6pm yesterday. Together with my husband we arrived at 5pm and we decided to look around at Wellcome Hotel and probably ask if the manager is really Mr. Rosario and if they have this promo raffle. I was disappointed that the Hotel was not the type I was expecting it should be (VIP seats huh?). That's why I haven't heard of it and initially thought it was just built last year. At the reception, I asked the attendant if Mr. Rosario was the manager. She said "NO" and told me that he is actually a manager of Stellar Office, one of their tenants. She immediately recognized that I received a text that I won the raffle seems to me that many have won and I started to be suspicious. I immediately googled in my smartphone for I might be victimized. And alas, found a lot posted on this kind of hardcore marketing strategy or scam however you may call that. We hurriedly left at the hotel and I texted the lady that I'm cancelling our free dinner and no longer interested to claim the vacation package. At first, the lady told me I could not cancel it cos she already paid our dinner. But I was firm I politely ask for an apology and still thank her. Glad she understood. Glad I did not attend and wasted our time. Glad I did not immediately post at fb that I won a vacation package xD

    2. Omg! Thank you Kristine for posting this. I had the same experience when we were in CDO 2yrs ago. They presented themselves as Astoria. We won a raffle daw when we gased up at Caltex. And just 2 days ago, while in Cebu now, we got the same offer from Stellar Hotel Boracay this time, exactly how you guys described it, with venue at Sarrosa Intl Hotel. And we declined as I recalled the experience we had in CDO which, thank God for posts line these, we were spared from having to deal with this worst marketing plot ever. Now, they're harassing my mother. Good thing I was around when they called her so I was able to immediately cut them off before my mother was talked into it further.

  41. Hi! Pati astoria ortigas! Kakaloka! Nag lunch kase kame ni boyfee sa alba, may pa-raffle sila there ang price is free trip to japan. So nag fill up kame. 2 days after may tumawag nanalo daw kame ng free dinner for 2 sa astoria ortigas dahil nga sa raffle ticket na finill up namen. Okay.. Lol! Well! What if sabihin ko naka bugatti kame?! So ayun! Tinawag ko ung servant agad and sinabi ko "miss bayadanan ko nalang ung buffet dna kame jojoin sa presentation kase we're not interested (with matching roll eyes). Tapos! ~style lang nila yan free dinner na yan. Ang totoo icocorner ka nila to get membership, so papakainin ka nila para mahiya ka tumanggi at makikinig ka sa presentation tas on the spot payment na! Duh! Kakahiya style nyo club astoria, so desperate!

Hi i already bought their 1 year membership with 30 coupons in it , i dont think na scam ksi yung nabili ko is worth 8998 which is 3d2n lng ng deluxe room nla sa astoria good thing in here i didnt book in agoda ksi i have a vacation this aug 25,2016 sa palawan and then i plan to book with astoria buti nlng we are in boracay last june 19,2016 and they offer this to us so my membership for 1yr is only 8998 with 3d2n in astoria palawan I already call astoria palawan and confirmed na ung booking and they have given us a complimentary buffet and also 3d2n in malaysia/indonesia/thailand so i dont think scam yung na offer skn . Ksi they are open nmn and diniscuss nila lahat including yung 100k upto 800k membership .

  48. Actually it will depend upon the capacity of the person to avail the membership. But the thing is I guess most people experienced nabigla lng tlga sa decision because of their eagerness to necome a membership. First bubusugin ka nila then after that's the time they will explain using the best marketing strategies of a flowery mouth na macoconvince ka na mura ang kaninilang magiging offer once you've become their member. They will show you first all the advantages , and compare what will be your expenses. But if you become as member talagang malaki ang difference na matitipid mo na talagang mapapa amaze ka sa explanation nila lalo na when they explained ung mga properties nila. But then in the latter part. Kapag your are in a state of mind na na convinced ka to become a member then they will now discuss the other fees like maintenance annual fee of 10,000 and other member affiliations na around 5,000 so syempre kc nga excited ka, it didn't bothered you anyway. And then boom! you are now a member. Then suddenly, you will realize na parang there is something wrong on the decision you have made because parang it seems unpractical because you are now computing between their options and your calculations. Kc nga parang ung feeling na na guilty ka kc kumain ka sa kanila and the environment or feeling na you don't have no choice but to be a member. Ung tipong na hypnotized ka :) What rude there was the 20,000 non-refundable if in case you back-out and they were saying for legal fees and sayang naman. But sana man lang naisip nla at least more or less 2,000 - 5,000 non-refundable at least reasonable for their expenses in food, laway for marketing etc., That is why they become sugapa at nanamantala sa mga taong hindi naman super yaman at nangangarap lng maka-experience ng best vacation in life.

    1. I think it simple as don't buy if you don't understand even you can afford, then you have to publish it's a scam. We even bought products has instructions and product details and we don't even read it, we just bought it because your friend said so or the endorser is you favorite celebrity. And even you cannot afford and you really wanted it, you will find a way to buy it, because for you it's worth it. Every company has their own strategy of marketing their products, if your invited to free diner for the exchange of their presentations, don't go if you only after for the free dinner but your own dinner instead. I love astoria and i am a member.

  51. Hi! Just wanna share my very fresh experience regarding this. Well, I received phone calls this August 8th lang from an unknown number then the woman who called said I won 3d2n accommodation for one of the hotels of Astoria. I am to choose daw the location. She asked me if I recall daw ba filling out a raffle coupon sa Gerry's Grill in Market Market last July 29th and yes I do recall it naman. So we got invited for a dinner for 2 in Uncle Cheffy's located in Nuvali, City of Santa Rosa, Laguna the next day I got the phone call. My boyfriend and I were thinking that it was just exclusively for 2 nga lang talaga pero pagdating dun there were a lot of other couples din. So we ate then we were anticipating na the 90 minutes presentation. They managed to set my expectations naman na may ganun talaga during every phone call and text I got from them beforehand. We weren't expecting though na hardcore selling sya. However, it's a good thing my boyfriend and I are both firm and we know our priorities. It did not even take 90 minutes. We politely declined every offer and we emphasized we're just taking the GC. It went well. No insults or any rude conversations between us and the agent. The GC is with me now. What's left of me is to call their customer service if available ba yung preferred dates namin for Stellar Boracay before I start booking flights for us. I guess their strategy will only be a scam if you do not equip yourself with presence of mind and priorities in life. :)

  55. Hello, everyone.

I received a call yesterday and today with almost the same dialogue (Astoria, free buffet, 3D/2N GC in Bora, 90min presentation). Then the person who called me up mentioned that she will text me the details. Since she mentioned it already it would be good for me. I need the text message to verify their details. As I read the text and searched Astoria's website it made me wonder... Why give me a free 3D/2N in a different hotel in Bora well in fact they have an affiliate hotel there? Because of that, I did further research and thanks to this blog my concern has been verified to be legitimate. My peace of mind outweighs the "scam"/scheme of free buffet and 3D/2N in Bora.

    Thanks again for this blog.

  69. my husband and i were a victim of this scam of club astoria. unfortunately we accepted the offer since nahiya kame tanggihan yung agent. we thought it would be a good investment but realized it was not because after you paid fully the membership there will still be a maintenance fee amounting to 12k to be paid annually. we really wanted to cancel the membership pero nanghihinayang kame sa nahulog namin since nakalagay sa contract na wala kame marerefund na kahit magkano after reading this blog nalaman ko na may mga nakakapagrefund naman pala. we are actually paying for the membership for almost 21months including pa the 20,000 na deposit na hiningi nila so almost 124k na nahuhulog namin that saddens me a lot. inistop nanamin un paghuhulog pero un nga baka lang matulungan mo kame since you are working sa law firm eksperimento baka naman mabigyan mo kame ng advice kung anong legal action pede namin gawin para makapagrefund sa scam na pakulo ni astoria. actually i already talked to the agent na nakausap namin before pero ang sabi niya lang we can sell the membership since transferable but we are the one who needs to find a buyer then after that they will be assisting us for the transfer of contract. pero xiempre ayoko naman mangloko ng katulad ng ginagawa nila. please help us. thanks.

    1. Hi I also signed up last month as a member of Astoria club. By any chance have u had any information on how to refund the deposited amounts? I only gave them my 17k on hand deposit and now they sent me an email to pay the complete contract in 2months to get more discounts etc. After reading all these testimonies I am now more doubtful kung itutuloy ko pa ba ung membership coz I don't want to waste more money syempre pinaghirapan un eh. Please if you get any information pra macancel ung contract and to still get the paid amount, please let me know thru my email jenxyudz@yahoo.com thank u again.

  70. This is so good to be true! Saturday, I filled up the raffle ticket, then today, they called na to tell that I won the raffle. Dinner for 2 at Astoria Ortigas, yan pa lang suspicious na... Sorry, but we did our research too. May mga nagsasabi, nasasayo kung magpapaloko ka pero hindi ba naloko ka na when you attend and listen for their 90 minute presentation? It's a waste of your precious time. Think about it. Thanks for this blog!

  74. Hi Kristine,

This is to share lang our recent experience with Astoria. My husband won a complimentary 3D2N stay in any of Astoria tie-up hotels (from Shell promo). We were invited last January 26 in SMX (their office) and we both agreed to attend na rin (may free buffet e *wink). The Marketing staff named Jay (forgot the last name) did the presentation. But prior to his presentation, I can sense na there is something about this meeting. I realized na o-offer-an kami ng membership nito. And it's true. At first, getting-to-know ang eksena. Na he's from Las Pinas also blah blah blah. He even mentioned na I was "timang" daw. I forgot what we were discussing that time e and besides I just want to keep silent na lang as he do all the talking. And then they discussed na we need to shell out 400k+ for the membership if we want to avail daw one night only offer. Hanggang sa bumaba ng bumaba ang offer. But when their convincing strategy did not make any magic, they immediately ended the presentation. What's surprising is that they didn't bother to discuss us the details of the complimentary: how we can use it, what are their tie-up hotels in Cebu and other stuffs na gusto sana namin itanong. On our way home, we were relieved na we did not pay anything. My worry lang is that if ever gamitin namin, baka naman pagdating namin sa hotel ay katakot-takot na billing ang bayaran namin. So I decided to call their office today to ask ano mga tie-up hotels nila. I checked their website for the contact details. Since may problem ang outgoing calls namin sa office, I called 09177906985, but to no avail, walang nasagot. I'm just wondering lang if Shell and their other "tie-up" companies know all about this. Madadamay din kasi ang credibility nila. Sana yung mga "nakakadudang" offer na ganito is makarating sa DTI and ma-clarify nila if this is legit. For those who have second thoughts on this, please take time to research. Thanks for taking time reading this.

  75. Thanks for sharing your stories. They just called me now, the coupon I filled up was just last Feb 2 upon dining in at AVenetto Glorietta. I am always conscious when ask to fill up things sa mga Supermarket, malls etc sa fear na gamitin ang details ko kung saan saan lalo Marketing, kaya I dont provide my true identity or number. But sa ganito din palang ways meron, akala mo legit. It only shows gaano kababa income ng mga businesses na to para gumamit ng ganitong tactics - desperate. Kailangan pang manloko ng kapwa. Tama, na dapat check ng huge companies pakikipag tie up nila with this. Bad publicity lang instead nakukuha ninyo Astoria with what ur doing.

  78. I would like to relate my horrible experience with AVLCI and how it ruined the rest of my vacation at Boracay after attending their presentation and paying PhP 55,120 for downpayment.

I arrived at Boracay around 4:00 PM on 12 February and since it was my first time, I immediately got to walking to check out the island. When I reached Gerry's Grill, a guy approached me and mumbled something I couldn't understand. I stopped to clarify what he had been trying to tell me. Big Mistake! I should just have continued walking and ignored him. He said they are offering free lunch buffet in exchange for 90 minutes of my time. I asked him presentation is about what. He just told me something like basta, or something like that. So I gave my name and telephone number. Big Mistake!

    ReplyDelete
  79. The next day, I was still sleeping and my phone kept ringing and receiving text messages reminding me of the lunch buffet at Astoria. I did not want to go there because I was still tired and sleepy but they were annoyingly insistent. So I relent.

I ate a mediocre buffet and sat through more than 2 hours of intense and personal interrogation. It was never a presentation. It was grueling interrogation. I did not want to answer most of the questions as I am a very private person but the holiday consultant was trained to get into your head and manipulate you into spilling your beans.

Personally, I don't believe that this business model is a scam. Timesharing is an existing business product that is extensively used in the USA. In the Philippines, only the Astoria and Azalea Properties are registered with RCI. RCI is a timesharing agency that affords a member an equivalent amount of occupancy into other hotels, resorts, or condominiums within its network. But let's talk about RCI later.

    ReplyDelete
  80. The holiday consultant was able to entrap me into entering into a contract by telling me a silly lie, which I admit had been very stupid on my part to have bought it. She told me that if I joined now and paid the downpayment, I will be able to avail of the RCI membership. If I decided to buy later, I will not be able to avail of the RCI membership and would only get the Astoria Palawan showcase. Total dirty liar.

When I reached my hotel, I immediately searched about the calculating scheme of RCI and found this blog.

The Holiday consultant kept me in the dark about the actual cost of membership until the very last minute. But I will reveal the cost here for everyone's benefits.

The contract is for 30 years which gives the member 7 nights and 8 days each year at Astoria Palawan for 6 persons. Through timesharing within Astoria Network, a member may avail of the same 7N/8D at other locations in Boracay, Bohol, and Ortigas for PhP 3,000. Through time sharing within the RCI network, an accommodation at Orlando, Florida, would cost a member SG 388 (Singapore dollars, since Astoria is under the RCI Asia-Pacific network).

    ReplyDelete
  81. The holiday consultant told me that the Palawan property costs PhP 26,000 per night. Lie. Upon checking with Expedia, although it got a Very Good Review (4.2/5.0), it only costs 13,000 per night. Also, as a member, you are not allowed to avail of the 7N/8D accommodation during Chinese New Year, Christmas, New Year, All Souls Day and other special holidays in the Philippines. In other words, you are only allowed to scavenge on the least attractive days.

The Membership has two options and costs PhP 950,000 (and discounted 20%), which becomes PhP 760,000 for a single room with 3 beds that can accommodate 6 individuals. A single room with 2 beds that can accommodate up to 4 individuals costs PhP 689,000 (minus 20%) becomes PhP 551,200.

Also, there is an annual maintenance fee of PhP 10,000 for 4-person room and PhP 12,000 for the 6-person room, for 30 years, which will increase by 10% every 5 years.

For timesharing within Astoria network alone, this is a very good offer. If you include the RCI network, this offer becomes even more fantastic. However, when you check the complaints of people, especially Americans about RCI, this is as bleak as it gets as RCI has consistently defrauded its members by selling the available rooms/units to booking agencies and informs its members that there is no availability at the times the members intended to book even if the members booked 1 year in advance. Also, there is an annual $150 membership fee with RCI. In other words, RCI membership is basically useless. However, in order for an individual to be a member of RCI, he has to have time shares, which can only be acquired through the timeshares purchased from Astoria through AVLCI

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, when you have your vacation abroad, you will only get the not so nice rooms!

      Delete
  82. Americans have told of horrible stories where they exchanged their time share points in other countries only to be billed several times more than the booking costs through websites. In other words, and I'm going to say this again, RCI is useless and all the things they promised and the things the Astoria people promised, are all lies.

Astoria has a good intention in giving away timeshares, only within its network. RCI is also a fantastic agency if only it lived up to its business model, but sadly, it doesn't based on the accounts of the majority of its members.

Let me clarify, the AVLCI is not a scam by any measure. It is a legitimate business model that offers 7N/8D accommodation at Astoria Palawan for free (once you become a member) and 7N/8D at other Astoria and Azalea properties throughout the Philippines for PhP 3,000.

    1. Anonymous posters like these are the best of the lot (in scamming), notice that they empathize with you at first but then they know a lot of details about the company and their so-called legitimate promos.

A scam that has gone on for more than 10 years is no doubt legal (they did their homework and set-up a company that skirts around the law) but it doesn't make it any less immoral.

      Delete
  83. However, the membership requires you to sign up for 30 years, which is a very long time. And a 30-year membership costs almost a million pesos, which, let's face it, is impractical at best. Are you going to spend close to a million pesos for vacation when you don't have anything to eat the next day? Impractical, right?

Also, the strategy at which they lure prospective customers is deceitful and shady at best.

Too bad. They have nice and legitimate product but the people who are selling it market it like they are like drugs.

I have cancelled my membership today and hopefully am only expected to lose PhP 20,000 as I have paid PhP 55,120. There has been no known or confirmed account where one successfully got back their money they paid that exceeded PhP 20,000. I'm crossing my fingers.

PhP 20,000 is a lot of money for a mediocre buffet and a fancy envelope.

I really regret not refusing an offer of free lunch buffet. And PhP 20,000 is a lot of money for learning a stupid lesson.

  92. I am now here in Boracay with my sister and mom. Sa jetty port pa lang someone approached us with free buffet nga daw, he even asked us kung ano work namin. We decided to go sa free dinner nila kase why not? Free e. But we were really skeptical to go. Then so yun na nga, we went to astoria hotel. Before binukasan ang buffet. Medyo na ano lang kame kase their questions are like really personal. So un, nag dinner na and all that. Tapos may lumapit nga na bading forgot his name siya nag assist sa amin para pumunta sa astoria current which is located in station 3. Pinakita sa amin ung hotel, syempre nagandahan talaga kame. Then pumasok kame dun sa office daw nila, daming tables at sobrang ingay. Haha pero good thing is, we declined all the offers pati ung 8k na pinaka mababang offer nila. Ang sabi ko kaya namen kaso we have priorities, before we invest sa ganyan uunahin na namin ung ibang bagay. Sinayang nila oras namin. Tapos talagang No lang ako ng No. Nung palabas na kme sa office nila, hinatid kame sa labas nung bading, pilit niya akong tinatanong kung hnd ko ba talaga kaya, kase alam daw niya ang work ko 50k daw sahod. Which is true, at more pa dun. Such a shame!!! Fuck you astoria!

  93. Geez.. to begin with, thanks Kristine for your initiative. I got a call from them today from a Joyce Angeles, and her spiels are pretty much the same from the others here. I began to wonder kasi she kept saying "No financial obligation sir, all you need to bring is your ID". In fact I recorded the conversation because I felt there's something wrong. Prior to ending the call, she asked the occupation of my better half (which I find irrelevant since I should be on the spotlight if indeed I was selected, so I told her she's self employed, then she asked "business din po ba sir?" Gladly answered her "not really, She has her own Law Firm" then all of a sudden the excitement on her voice got drained. It's been an hour waiting for her text to give me the details on where to claim the certificate but heheheeh.. looks like she chamged her mind. So while scrolling down the page and seeing year 2013... 2014... 2015... 2016... and this year, all I can see on the page are the words "OFFER... MEMBERSHIP.. SWIPE.. and WITHDRAWAL. Well, that summarizes my research. Damn, why do these evil beings exist? Again thanks everyone for sharing.. Kristine.. high five! GOOOJAB!

In my case, my home resort is Astoria Palawan Puerto Princesa.

      1. Free buffet (mediocre food in exchange for 90 minutes of your time, which could go on for 6 hours. so be prepared)
      2. 7N/8D at home resort for each year, which can be accumulated to up to 3 years (21 days), or can be separated in 2 occasions, example, 3 days in March and 4 days in November.
      3. 7N/8D can be exchanged anywhere within the Astoria network (Boracay, Baguio, Ortigas, Bohol) and Azalea Network
      4. You can rent out the 7D/8N to Airbnb, because they say you can do anything with it, and they even encourage it.
      5. You can accommodate anyone there.

I was claiming that at last I'm not a loser on raffle tickets. lol! However, I felt something negative because they kept on updating and checking me if we're coming so, I did not think twice to check it on the website regarding stellar vacation club. 106. I read all the comments from 2013 up to here... And there is no one confirmed that they were actually able to use up their gift certificate and were able to recover the 5k deposit requirement prior to checking in... Today June 2 2017 , I just got into the same scheme, the fronting company is Stellar Vacation Club. We were asked to visit Helen's Kitchen in Buhangin, Davao for a free dinner and to claim our 3 days 2 night free accomodation GC. Gladly I made my research first... This is definitely a SCAMMM!!!To all Davawenios, hopefully mabasa nyo ito. There was no DTI number on the coupons to begin with. I was so disappointed that this modus is still on the loose... The affiliated companies where they are distributing these coupons are so disappointing to support such deceptive marketing strategy... THIS MUST STOP! And all businesses, establishements and persons invlolve must pay accordingly!

  107. Buti na lang I found this blog. I received a call from some JOB PEREZ from STELLAR regarding a complimentary buffet for 2 and a gift cert for a 3days 2nights accom local and international trip. Kaya pala iba feeling ko nung matapos kaming magusap. nag search talaga ako agad if legit ba and I found this blog.

  108. Hi. Same experience here. You can email me at angel_nej16@yahoo.com. Ako din nbiktima. Pero we will avoid being victimized further if we will not give them the downpayment. Ok sana pero if mabilis magrefund and ok ang reviews ng ibang guests, pede sana ituloy. As for me, same din June 15 binigay nila na deadline. And hindi ako magbibigay. If sulatan nila ako about the 20k. So be it. Wag tayong patakot sa mga yan.

Athough it's more than a month since we decided to cancel as the guy who spoke to us we have 60 days to cancel. anyhow, im searching for any post about someone hiring a lawyer and pursue this.

So after 20 min. they called me again sabi hindi ako pwede. Then kinukulit ako so parang nakatunog na ako na iba to parang kakaiba. 126. Establishments who play a part in this scam should be taken to task as well. We are already paying for their products and services and they still expose us and our information to these scammers. Not to mention that I gave a considerable tip for our meal.

Notice that as threads like this become more popular that there are anonymous posters who are suddenly saying that it was not a scam but an aggressive marketing strategy, or that you can play the other side because you really won that raffle, or worse, people who say that Club Astoria is a legitimate business and they don't see anything wrong, but with a very important caveat: they haven't used any of the GCs or checked into any of the hotels and are HOPING that when they do it will be ok.

The best way to avoid losing your money is to run away as soon as you smell the stench of a scam. Don't follow suggestions of people who are obviously a part of this scam, the moment you step in to that free buffet and presentation, your chances of getting away unscathed is markedly reduced. They will use all the usual tools to make gullible people bend to their will, especially Filipinos, they will belittle you, make you insecure, as if falling for a multi-thousand peso scam will make you appear better in public.

The most intelligent people don't even attempt to go into the dragon’s lair.

And for those people who are worried about being sued for breach of the contract. Don't worry, they don't have anything on you, their investment is limited to cheap buffets and a few hours of conference room space. Scammers who cheat people for their living won't have enough money to pay for lawyers. And there’s always the DTI.

    _______________________FILIPINO VERSION_________________________

  127. Astoria club membership is not worth it, a warning to all, dont buy this timeshare because aside from what you have paid, you still have to pay a lot of hidden charges. Im a victim of this timeshare,im a club member now but I dont enjoy it. Aside from the 250k I have paid which according to them is only payment for accommodation, I still have to pay maintenance fee that increases every year, reservation fee, etc. This charges are not shown, explain during the selling, you will only find these after you have the contract. So in total of 15 weeks, we will lose money of more than half a million. The travel abroad they promised during the selling, you can only avail it if your a member of rci, but you have to pay additional charges again that cost a lot. With this timeshare, breakfast, free shuttle, etc are not included. There are so many items that are not included in the timeshare and you will only know this after you fully paid the contract. Beware, this is a lost of money, they only have limited astoria hotels here in philippines. Think about this, for your 15weeks timeshare contarct, you can only go to boracay, palawan, bohol, ortigas coz if you want to travel abroad, another additional charges. You will not enjoy this timeshare due to many hidden charges. It will only stress you. So DONT BUY ASTORIA TIMESHARE, eat their offered dinner/lunch then leave. Hope this help you all. Dont be another victim like me.

  131. I got a call just now. I was in front of my laptop when some "Diane" called from Stellar Hotel Boracay. She told me I have free dinner at Harbor City plus accommodation with 3days and 2nights blah blah blah... and a 90 minute presentation after. I wondered where this came from because I'm not the kind of person who does raffle or lottery. So I declined saying I can't make it tomorrow at that time (thank God for my work!). She was also asking personal questions and I was hesitant to answer it. I just thought maybe someone set it up for me but then it's not my birthday yet and Christmas is still about a month far. After the call, I immediately did some research regarding the hotel. This article was what came up and I'm glad I took the time to read it. Thank you very much for this post!

It's 2018 and they're at it again.. my husband and I ate at PhoBac restaurant in Galleria last Feb 6, a lady approached us for raffle entries, we filled it up and today, A lady named Erica Loyola approached us saying that we've won a dinner for 2 at Astoria Plaza, Ortigas and she said we are also a recipient of a GC for a complimentary 3D and 2N stay on select hotels in Palawan, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and USA in which we will receive after a 90 minute presentation after the dinner. My husband and I thought it was sketchy as we don't have luck to won raffle entries x) x) x) And so we googled it and finally stumbled upon this thread.. Thank God.. So we decided hindi na kami tutuloy on our scheduled free dinner tomorrow :)
