CMK EATS : TOP 6 HEALTHY YUMMIES TO TRY THIS SEASON

We need to eat healthy food to be mentally sane! That's what the words from Good Housekeeping magazine meant to me (see above). I am not sure about you but it took me a long while to appreciate fresh food as opposed to quick, instant ones. I'm glad I did.

This season is 2013's last month without the -BER on. Time flies so fast, I know! And it passing makes me nervous, excited and comfortable all at the same time. What's this season got to do with healthy eating? Well, CHRISTMAS season (read: more get together line-ups) are fast approaching and we need to be conscious on what we're gulping before our waistlines tell us so. With this, a round of applause to our:

TOP 6 HEALTHY YUMMIES TO TRY THIS SEASON
(plus my quick thoughts about them)

SPICY CHICKEN PASTA SALAD
(THE COFFEE BEAN AND TEA LEAF)
Twas my first time to try the salad at CBTL. Ever my favorite coffee hub, I embarked on a journey to at least taste test their teas and salads. I got the coupon from my Belle de Jour planner (click HERE). I only paid for the salad, iced tea was free.

It was served cold with the spiral noodles on. There were chunks of chicken plus cucumber and sayote (not so sure). Lettuces were the majority. Here's the deal breaker: I once thought the pinkish sprinkles were pomelo (suha) shreds, only to find out it was RAW ONION! Harrummmph! I ended up nitpicking the whole plate.

Salad alone was Php 175. I love CBTL but I won't be ordering this salad anytime soon. I find it too pricey plus the onion incident made me stick my tongue out whenever I recall munching some of those >:)

CAESAR SALAD (PIZZA HUT)
Regular Php 79. Family Php 255. This was by far, the most affordable fine dining salad I've ever tasted. I've been a fan of this salad since 2008 and I'm happy to divulge that this is one of the first salad I've eaten (I don't eat anything leafy before).

They have crisp romaine lettuce, bacon crumble, parmesan cheese, and herbed croutons tossed in our caesar dressing. I love their dressing. Picture above was a family bowl (good for 4). If you're on a diet, this can keep you going for a day (or half, depends on your appetite). You can also request to take out what's left and ask the lovely waitress fro a second helping of dressing. After eating these, you'll be full, guaranteed! Bonus: You won't find yourself craving for junk food after.

CHAMOMILE TEA (STARBUCKS)
Php 100+ for a grande cup. This is a comforting herbal blend of chamomile flowers, hibiscus flowers, spearmint, lemongrass, rose petals, blackberry leaves, peppermint, sarsaparilla, lemon balm, licorice root, and natural flavors. This blend is a light, soothing beverage with the sweet, floral taste of chamomile and a smooth finish.

Another first! I opted to try a non-caffeinated tea since it was already 9 pm-ish when we decided to go for Starbucks. Set your expectations right, it's a tea and it tastes like one. Barrista handed me 2 packs of honey for sweetener.

What I loved most was the AFTER-EFFECT! I released all the oil and toxins I've consumed the entire day! Released via nature's call, if you know what I mean. Very refreshing inside and out. I noticed that I've slept more soundly that night.

L'OREAL PROFESSIONNEL WAVE CONTOUR SPRAY (FOR PERMED HAIR) REVIEW

For someone who has a digipermed hair for years, I've road tested quite a few hair products in between. L’Oreal Professionnel Wave Contour Spray, however, is new to me. I got them when I went to the Korean Style Launch of L'Oreal and Tony & Jackey (more on that HERE)

DETAILS:
L'OREAL PROFESSIONNEL WAVE CONTOUR
SPRAY (FOR PERMED HAIR)
Available at: Tony & Jackey Salons
Price: Php 700 approx (based on internet prices)

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS:
☺Light Texture. It's water based and therefore light to hair strands.
Substance sort of vanishes upon application.
I didn't experience any dandruff or irritations.
☺Sunshiny Smell. I love it's hard-to-describe smell.
It's so faint that you can't recognize it not until you sniff
the solution directly from the palm of your hands.
☺Once is Enough. Application that is. Squirts will last
my whole day which makes the product's price
a bit economical if you'll do the math closely.
☺Holding Capacity. L'oreal is an institution for a reason.
I don't know what's the chemical composition of this
beauty but it makes my curls lively sans the hard-locks feel.

* To use, spritz on to towel-dried or dry hair. Do not rinse. *

MONEY MATTERS : HOW CAN I WITHDRAW MY MONEY FROM COL FINANCIAL?

In the interest of most of my friends asking about this topic, I thought of writing this blog post for FYI :) Allow me to put a disclaimer that I am a happy client of COL Financial and while I often promote their platform as an online stock broker, these articles are in no way sponsored. They're doing a good job plus I find the people, behind COL, credible - so all support!

Investing is of course two-way. There's a time for everything, they say. While we take pleasure to set apart money for future use, there are instances that we need to take them out for good reasons.

NOTE: I tried these steps personally and I'm here to attest exiting your funds from COL is easy and convenient. Yay!

HOW CAN I WITHDRAW MY MONEY FROM COL FINANCIAL?

Step 1:
Download COL withdrawal form and accomplish them accordingly (PDF form, HERE)
Step 2:
Scan or take a picture of your form and email it to withdrawals@colfinancial.com. Instruct them whether you want them to deposit the money in your local bank account or via check.
*
IMPORTANT TIPS:
♣ Contrary to what I've read on other forums, COL does not require you to send the original copy (of Withdrawal Form) to their office. It is optional not mandatory. I've called them and verified that a picture of the form with your handwritten signature will suffice.

♣ There is an auto-generated mail that you'll receive as soon as you sent the PDF form to withdrawals@colfinancial.com. To be sure, I have also typed my deposit instruction just in case my handwriting is not readable. I've included my account number, account name and bank details. They observe 11 am cut-off, FYI.

♣ For added reference, I took a picture of my PRC ID. Exposing my name, professional number and other details. Make sure that your ID is still valid (not expired).

CMK TRAVELS : TOP THINGS TO DO IN KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA (PART 1)

Have you experienced a Last Song Syndrome (LSS) on Malaysia, Truly Asia's jingle? I did. And I am glad that I've set my foot in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia for the first time! Different personalities have different ideas on how ideal travel should feel like. For us, our main goal is to relax and enjoy what our itinerary can accommodate. We didn't dare to even think of rummaging the whole place because it kinda defeats the "to relax and have a good time" purpose. Yes?

Experience their metros
First order of the day, ride their monorails. Because we are WEIRD like that! :)) Seriously, KL has 8 metros and traveling all over the place is relatively easy, even for newbies. They have a touch screen machine where you can insert designated coins and bills, press where do you wanna go and a token (plastic chip) will come out.

Fare is cheap compared to Manila and their trains are spacious. I definitely had a good time hopping from station to station as compared to Bangkok (HERE) since there's less traffic in KL.

Say Hello! to the Famous Petronas Twin Tower
We would not miss this for the world! Truth be told, there's nothing magnanimous about the tower (me thinks). It resembles RCBC Plaza or The Enterprise Center from the outside. Nonetheless, Maya and I had this "Ah, Ito pala yun!" moment. Another challenge we experienced? The lighting! It seems that each angle is against the light.

Simple as it may seem, looking at the tower reminds me on how stable Malaysian economy is. I'm happy for our fellow men living on this side of earth.

Enjoy An Casa Hotel, Kuala Lumpur
Commown! I love, love, love this hotel. It only costs us Php 1,000 a day (if I remember it right!) but the whole place is a haven for tired feet and body! I once thought that I'd have a hard time sleeping but whoala, 5 mins after my body hit the bed... there came a Zzzz sound!

Buffet breakfast was yummy and filling. I particularly adored their chicken with gata (coconut milk) made spicy, fruits and yogurt. Their coffee was not that strong though. Their cable channels are limited but again their Char Kuey Teow (Malaysian version of Pad Thai) was so delicious. The minute we put down our luggage, I ordered a room service because I was so hungry!

Place was accessible to their China Town and metro station. There's also a Nando's Chicken  (a famous chicken restaurant) nearby. I give my two thumbs up for An Casa Hotel!

Slurp a Smoothie at Boost, Berjaya Mall
Maya has to go somewhere and since we can't text, we decided to meet here at the BOOST. It's a smoothie bar with lots of choices to drool from. I chose Choco-Banana smoothie but instead of vanilla yogurt, I asked to put strawberry yogurt instead. Result? Fruity and yummy concoction. BUT... There's a catch. Find out after the jump!

MONEY MATTERS : HOW TO OPEN A MUTUAL FUND ACCOUNT AT ATR KIMENG?

Mutual Funds or in layman's term: pakikibakas is becoming big in the Philippines. This is a good by-product of the financial literacy spike among Filipinos. I believe it's about time to take control of our future (up to some extent).

Whether your goal is to travel Europe or to enjoy a comfortable retirement, you need to do something about it. You can make your money work for you, BUT, before you do that, arm yourself with INFORMATION! One of the six factors that can make you rich! Click HERE for the other factors.

I've been invested directly in PSEi (stocks) via COL Financial. To open an account at COL is an altogether topic we've covered HERE.

As part of diversification, I am dipping my feet onto another investment vehicle called Mutual Funds!

WHY ATR KIMENG?
There's a big chance that this is the first time that you've heard of ATR KimEng. Trust me, I've heard about them, quite recently too. However, I opted to invest a portion of my savings here because of one BIG TIME REASON! They are listed as Number 1 on Top Mutual Funds in the Philippines list. (Source: HERE).

SPECIFIC FUND THAT I CHOSE.
I consider myself as an aggressive investor since I intend to remain invested for the next 5 years. I chose ATRKE Equity Opportunity Fund. This is an equity fund invested primarily in Philippine equity securities.

HOW TO OPEN A MUTUAL FUND ACCOUNT AT ATR KIMENG?

Step 1: Familiarize yourself about it.
Someone said that the riskiest investment you'll make is the one that you know nothing about. With that in mind, it wouldn't hurt to brush up some publications about how mutual fund works. When you have time, visit ATR KimEng Website.

Step 2: Personally visit ATR KimEng office.
It is MANDATORY because they need to see you for signature specimen (as I've been told). If you're familiar with Makati, this is a good news for y'all.

ATR KimEng Asset Management
15th Flr. Tower One & Exchange Plaza,
Ayala Triangle, Ayala Avenue, Makati City 1200

Step 3: Deposit your Money at HSBC, BPI or BDO.
In my case, since there's a BDO office at Ayala Stock Exchange, I decided to drop by and deposit my initial investment. You only need to fill up a deposit slip, hand over the money to the smiling cashier and that's it!

Note: Someone from ATRKE will give you a tiny paper that has their partner banks. It also includes the bank details to make your life easier!

MONEY MATTERS : WHICH IS BETTER, MUTUAL FUNDS OR STOCKS?

Simply put, you can add your money to the other people's money and together you'll pool your fund to buy stocks for capital appreciation. That what Mutual Fund (MF) is. MF will be handled by fund managers who are knowledgeable enough to maximize your gains and minimize your losses.

An investment vehicle that is made up of a pool of funds collected from many investors for the purpose of investing in securities such as stocks, bonds, money market instruments and similar assets. Mutual funds are operated by money managers, who invest the fund's capital and attempt to produce capital gains and income for the fund's investors. A mutual fund's portfolio is maintained to match the investment objectives stated in its prospectus. (Source: Investopedia)

Which is better - Stocks or Mutual Funds?
Firstly, let it be known that mutual funds may invest in stock market too. Some people ask if it's best to invest in stocks directly or invest in mutual funds instead. It has it's pro's and con's.

ADVANTAGES:*

Professional Management
One of the main attractions of mutual funds is that it affords its investors, particularly the small ones, the services of full-time professional managers whose job is to analyze the various investment products available in the market and select those that would give the best possible returns to the fund and its shareholders.

Low Capital Requirement
Most mutual funds in the Philippines require a minimum initial investment amount of only Php5,000.00 and minimum additional investments of Php1,000.00.

Diversification
There is a saying that goes,  “Do not put all your eggs in one basket.”  There is no such thing as a “sure” thing.  An important investment principle that requires holding several securities to reduce the risks associated with investing in individual securities is called diversification. When people invest in a mutual fund, they achieve instant diversification because the fund is usually invested in a wide array of securities.* Source: Philippines Investment Funds Association

ESTEE LAUDER LIP CONDITIONER REVIEW

When the lovely sales lady handed me this gift with purchase (GWP) item, I rolled the tube to see what color this Estee Lauder lipstick holds. I did that exactly and found a white ecru shade. "Err, what is this again?" I politely asked. She mentioned about one makeup item I heard for the first time: Lip Conditioner.

You see, the reason I'm not uber confident to be called a ba-yu-ti (beauty) blogger is that I know deep inside that I have a loooot of things I don't know yet, but nonetheless, I am a self confessed beauty lover so never mind the play with words. We love all things beautiful. Yun na! :)

DETAILS:
Estee Lauder Lip Conditioner
Available at: Estee Lauder Counters (got mine from
Duty Free Philippines, Paranaque)
Price: $16.00 approx (Php 700++)
* This is a gift with purchase. I specifically bought Estee Lauder in Pleasure and Bloom.

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS:
☺Moisturizing Agent. Since this is the age of matte lipsticks, our lips need extra TLC to prevent them from drying.

☺Dual purpose. A soothing moisture treat for your lips. Apply under lipstick as hydrating base coat, or wear overnight as an intensive treatment. (Source)

☺Packaging and scent. Typical Estee Lauder. Top of the line sophistication coupled with faint flowery scent. No overpowering scent though.

CMK WISHFUL THOUGHT:
☻Price. I think the price is too much for a colorless product. However, if your lips is in dire need of hydration, you might as well pay the tab.

CMK TRAVELS : THE SKY RANCH TAGAYTAY EXPERIENCE

Who would have thought that there'd be an amusement park right in the smack of Tagaytay?! Sky Ranch was on their soft opening when we visited. It was one Saturday afternoon and we had our long overdue reunion. We savored a hearty lunch (with Tawilis and Bulalo, of course) then headed to this happy place.

The View.
Ambiance can be likened to an improvised perya. They have at least 2 main attractions that time. Sky Eye (Ferris wheel) and Super Viking. Place has clowns and anime characters roving around. People are not lining up and you can ride the attractions to your heart's content. No blasting happy sounds though I wouldn't mind since I hate loud noises. But, honestly, it doesn't feel like an amusement park without much noise :) Walk around and you'll find booths that sell cold drinks, waffles, cotton candies.

The Ticket.
Guests are required to pay Php 100 upon entrance and an add-on fee should be paid on a per ride basis. Yes, they don't have the ride all you can promo just yet. However, since they're still on soft opening, they give us 50% off. You can also avail their horse back riding fair on the left side of the park. Noteworthy to mention that their comfort rooms are clean and pee-friendly.

The Super Viking!
Fee is Php 100 per ride. If you've experienced Anchors Away at Enchanted Kingdom, that is chicken. The "super" in the super viking is there for a reason! I was literally screaming on top of my lungs because I can feel the falling sensation and the feeling felt real. Sorry, I'm not making sense. I promise, your shouts won't make sense too if you try this one!

I enjoyed this ride really! If you're feeling senti and contemplating about life or anything serious... just hop on this thing and you'll feel like a 4 year-old kid, guaranteed!

The Experience.

MONEY MATTERS : 5 FACTORS THAT CAN MAKE YOU RICH

Let's take a quick break from anything beauty related and let's discuss something everybody needs for survival... money! I intend this to be a light read coupled with WHAT NOW? portion  just to perk your imagination on what to plan next ;)

Factor 1: Information. What's the difference between a rich and poor person? It's not money, but information. Ask a rich person how to multiply his money and he'll tell you about businesses, investments and savings. Maybe he's not ultra-rich right now, but surely he'll go places. Francisco Colayco, author of best selling books shared that INFORMATION is one of the top reasons why people cannot get away from poverty.

What now? There are so many channels of information today. Scan the Youtube, Google sites or blogs about investing. Information is just a click away. Likewise, don't expect that you'll absorb everything in one go. Just keep it simple. And doable. The rest will follow.

Time is currency too!
Factor 2: Time. Time is a great equalizer. Don't tell me someone has 27 hours a day. No matter how rich or poor people are, we all have 24 hours. Some may be born with money, but time - everybody has the same hours per day.

The younger you start sowing, the sooner you'll start reaping. This is an amazing trivia: If you have invested your money in the Philippine stock market, in 5 years time, you may have doubled your money on the 5th year. Of course, this is only a hindsight review, no promises. But why don't you try it and see for yourself? It's risky, I can hear you. But inflation is risky too, don't you think?

What now? Recognize that time is your best friend. Stock market will go up and down. It can't go up permanently (I've seen it first-hand, and panicked a bit) - but just the same, it can't go down forever. Look at 2008 financial crisis. Where are we now? I always love sharing this story: If you remain invested from year 2008, you may have tripled your money now. Far better than the measly 3-5% time deposit income (which has a final tax of 20%, by the way).

Factor 3: Act Now Attitude. The thing with retreats and seminars is such events are full of energy and you 'intend' to do things now. But that enthusiasm will wane after one week, one month or who knows hours after the gathering. Intentions, no matter how grand, are useless without action.

TONY & JACKEY KOREAN DIGIPERM (GANGNAM STYLE) REVIEW

I have been fortunate to experience the launch of three Korean City Styles at Tony & Jackey. I got a Gangnam Style look. To see the pegs and some stories about the event, click HERE. Let's talk details now. Let me start with the status of my hair. My hair was super dry due to frequent treatment and hair coloring. I've been indulging my curiosity since 2 years ago, and along the process, my hair got damaged unfortunately. Here are the steps that they've made to "revive" my dry strands:

Assess. Shampoo. Treat.
I have Ms. Rebecca as my pleasant hair stylist for the day. Together with Mr. Sky (owner of Tony & Jackey), Ms. Rebecca analyzed my hair. I got a feedback that it was so dry and while they really want to deliver a seamless result, they made a warning and asked me if I want to go over the procedure. All's well that ends well. I gave them my nod and the rest is a magical transformation. After assessment, Grace shampooed my hair. Ms. Rebecca applied some form of solution on my strands afterwards.

Color. Shampoo. Makeup.
Since my black hair was starting to show up, she opted to color my hair first. She decided to even out my base (with Clear Brown) for a clean look. If you'll notice, there's a thin plastic-cover-like sheet put on top of my forehead. This is to prevent colorants from splashing over my eyes. It has a double-sided tape on top, so brilliant! While I was on it, Ms. Tyrene created my FOTD. Smokey eyes and nude lips. Look at how my brows were set on this picture. Youth-like and not bushy.

Haircut. Rebond. Digiperm. Neutralize.
After some few minutes, my hair color was done! She cut my hair into layers to reduce volume. I had a fluffy hair so that plus the perm curls might have me end up looking like an afro. To remedy, layered locks is always a good idea. They had a sophisticated digiperm machine! It is so comfortable and very high tech. They twisted and curled half of my hair and left it hanging for 10 minutes (I guess).

They rebonded the first half, then digipermed the other half (of my hair, that is). I got the shock of my life when they first removed the curls, I was like "Bakit ang iksi?!" (Why so short?!). Ms. Rebecca shared that it won't be THAT short. True enough, after they neutralized my locks, ta-da-dan! I love it (happy dance) \o/

L'OREAL PROFESSIONNEL AND TONY & JACKEY LAUNCHES KOREAN CITY STYLE

xxx
I was in a train at Kuala Lumpur Malaysia when I opened my personal inbox. On our way to KL airport bound to Manila, I opened an email from Mikki inviting me to an event. L'oreal Professionnel, together with Tony & Jackey, launches 3 Korean perm styles uniquely crafted for Asian hair. Of course, I got excited! They are offering three different hairstyles as below:

Left: Busan Style, Middle: Gangnam Style, Right: Hong Dae Style
Since I want to maintain my long hair, I replied to Mikki and chose Gangnam Style. I was in two minds whether to have my hair cut for the bangs, either way, I'm okay. I'm glad that the event was not crowded and bloggers can really move around and take pictures to their heart's content.

The Event.
It was one colorful event. As soon as I passed through the Tony & Jackey door, everyone was so friendly and they're all smiling at me. Launch was held at Tony & Jackey West Ayala branch. Colorful cupcakes and candies were all around. They also served main course entrees. I didn't get the chance to test-taste them since I was still full from lunch. All I can say is that the PR team knows their job well. They made it a point that everyone is happy and comfortable. Mikki and Den were roaming every now and then to check on us. The lovely dessert buffet is from BAKER STREET. Like them on FB, HERE.

The Details.
I got kilig when I saw my picture. All bloggers who confirmed their attendance have that. As simple as it may sound, I appreciate the fact that they went through all these itsy-bitsy details to make us feel special. Before the event officially started, Mr. Sky and the entire PR Team had a quick meeting. They decided whose hair stylist will be assigned to each blogger, and I got Ms. Rebecca. She's the manager from Tony & Jackey, Magallanes branch.

The Place.
You wouldn't miss T&J Ayala branch. It's beside Sykes building near RCBC Plaza. Place is screaming Korean. Their sounds can be likened to the sounds of Myeongdong stores. They also have lockers so you don't have to tag along your things when you need to change places. It comes with their own keys too. Convenience at its finest!

CMK SHOPS : MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE ALL-WHITE (ALMOST) HAULS

Though I know that VNC and Charles & Keith are the famous local brands at Malaysia and Singapore, respectively, I had no clear-cut expectations on what to shop specifically. Life's full of surprises indeed. I ended up going home with extra-money plus an all-white (almost) haul from my recent trip!

Here's a simple round-up of what I bought with their approximate prices (from L to R).
* VNC (Vincci) flats for 21 Malaysia Ringgit - less than Php 300.
* Charles & Keith foldback wallet - Php 1,200
VNC (Vincci) watch for Php 550.
* Estee Lauder Dual Perfume (30 ml each) for Php 2,800 (Duty Free PH)

Truth be told, my CLINIQUE perfumes (HERE) from my last trip to Bangkok haven't been all used up yet. However, I felt compelled to buy Estee Lauder's (EL) pair of perfume since mommy wants the EL Pleasures in Bloom variant.

CMK EATS : LA PETITE CAMILLE (VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT) REVIEW

If there's any people on whom I had worked with till 4 am in the morning, they are these people! I've began my career with SGV & Co emphasis: "not-so-long-ago". That was my first job. And they are my first office friends! We've been through highs and lows and even if we seldom meet these days, it was such a breeze of fresh air one Saturday afternoon when we reconnected once more! There's one missing person on the loop. Hi Glenda! Click HERE to see her :)

We craved for something Vietnamese, and so we got what we wanted! Details:
Where: LA PETITE CAMILLE (Greenbelt 5 branch)
Budget: Php 1,600 to P1,800 good for 4 pax

Pomelo Salad
Salad is mighty refreshing! Pomelo (suha) takes the center stage. Romaine lettuces are served fresh and while the salad is not as busy as compared to other greens, this makes a great appetizer.

Pho Soup
Healthy is the word. I'm moving away from fried food as much as I can and this is a welcome alternative! I particularly like the noodle's texture. Coupled with a hint of chili and hot soup. This is it. Done! Slurp! Side Note: The pleasant waitress was kind enough to divide the soup into 4. Best to consume while steaming hot. Chili and soy sauce are served but if you're not into spicy entrees the condiments as is will suffice.

Pad Thai
My favorite! I am in two minds which is better. Soi's (then Oody's) version or this one. They taste superb. Pasta is al dente. Veggies are crunchy. If you want the whole dish to be sweet, mix the grounded peanuts all over.

Sweet and Sour Cutler Fish
Another must-try. The sauce and leafy vegetables compliment well with the fish. I find the fish a bit bland though. I paired this number with Pad Thai above (a good rice alternative, in fairness).

Ever heard of Vietnamese Jell-o?
